Various roads in Polokwane closed due to taxi driver blockade

POLOKWANE – Motorists are advised to avoid a number of roads in the city as they have been blocked by taxis.

Drivers from the Seshego-Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA) blocked off several streets in the Polokwane CBD. These streets include Market, Church, Jorissen, Grobler and Thabo Mbeki streets.

Traffic is congested in various areas.

SPTA spokesperson Ally Harmer confirmed Exam that their members and members of the Flora Park and Westenburg taxi associations blocked these streets because they were ‘surprised’ that the Leeto la Polokwane bus service had resumed today (August 19).

“We woke up to hear that the bus service would continue today but were told it would be suspended until next Tuesday when we were due to meet with the Municipality of Polokwane. said at our Monday meeting that they would meet with the “higher structures” and consult with us again.”

Harmer said they felt “undercut” because he said they received no feedback regarding the municipality’s discussion with “higher structures.”

“If we reach an agreement, the bus service will run smoothly again,” he said and added that commuters using taxis need not worry. “Our associations are working together to help our commuters and our operations are running smoothly.”

Exam contacted Leeto la Polokwane’s spokesperson, Rebotile Malakalaka, and David Ramakgwakgwa, the Acting Director of Roads and Transport Services for Leeto la Polokwane. They could not immediately be reached for comment.
