Police investigate fight between taxi drivers in Patong

PHUKET: Police are investigating a street brawl involving motorbike taxi drivers in Patong after video of the incident was posted online raising questions about the image of tourism in Phuket.

The scuffle involving the Patong ‘public transport’ drivers broke out around 12.45am yesterday, June 18, on Patong’s famous Thaweewong Rd., directly opposite the Patong Immigration Police office and about 200 meters from Bangla Community Police Station.

The incident was recorded by an on-board camera of a passing vehicle. The video was then uploaded and went viral.

A 39-second clip shows a group of people beating up another person right in the middle of the beach road. Some of the attackers are wearing blue vests, a typical uniform of Patong motorbike taxi drivers. The end of the fight was not shown in the clip.

Later, local Thai media reported that several people presented themselves to the police in Patong and confirmed that there was a conflict between the local motorbike taxi drivers and a competitor “not from their queue”. who attempted to pick up a passenger in their area.

It was not revealed whether the passenger was a Thai national or a foreign tourist. The anonymous victim has yet to report the incident to the police.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Major General Sermphan Sirikong confirmed to local media that he had been made aware of the incident and ordered Patong Police to investigate the matter fully. form. Yet, no official statement has been released so far by Phuket Provincial Police or Patong Police.
