One of the reasons is that online taxi services are more affordable than other public transport options. As a result, more and more locals are using online taxi services to get from one place to another.

Furthermore, the advent of online taxi services has also brought economic benefits to an increasing number of women, most of whom depend on this activity for their survival.

“I am a full-time taxi driver. It’s my main source of income right now,” said Rebecca Zulu, 36, a single mother living in Lusaka.

Zulu recounted how he lost his job in June 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, when his employer decided to lay off some workers after the business halted.

She explained that she became a taxi driver after discovering taxi services online and was one of the few women who took the initiative at the time.

Like many Zambian women involved in the online taxi service business, Zulu used her own car as a taxi. “I have been working as a taxi driver for a little over a year. Business is good. I make enough money to support my two young children,” she said.

Sandra Kazambe, 28, also a taxi driver in Lusaka, said online taxi services have opened up economic opportunities for many empowered women like her.

Kazembe noted that more Zambian women are now entering male-dominated fields and that society is slowly accepting the fact that women can also be taxi drivers.

Kazrmbe, a human resources staff member of a company, further disclosed that he ventured into the online taxi business to supplement his family’s income.

“I only work as a taxi driver from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays because I have a full-time job. I work more hours on weekends and holidays. I’ve been a taxi driver for about a month,” she said.

Today, there are a number of online taxi service companies in the country. Among these are Ulendo, Yango and Zamcab. ■
