Taxi drivers in the spotlight

LIMPOPO — Traffic officials in the province are cracking down on illegal public transport operators, according to Ministry of Transport spokesman Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala.

Moremi-Taueatsoala said that through its roadblocks conducted with SAPS, the department is able to make public transport safer.

He said this in a statement after seven taxis were seized in Blood River for operating without a license.

Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya stressed that these roadblocks will help ensure provincial roads are safer for everyone.

“We express our gratitude to all traffic officers who work tirelessly to keep our roads safe,” she said earlier after a taxi was seized on the N1.

Moremi-Taueatsoala’s earlier statement said the taxi was impounded near Mokopane for carrying 12 passengers over the authorized limit.

“Limpopo traffic officers found that the driver was carrying 28 passengers, more than the authorized 16, without an operating permit,” he concluded.
