Taxi app Free Now has reported an increase in requests for nighttime rides following the reopening of nightclubs.
Free Now said: “With the easing of restrictions across the country over the [October] Bank holiday weekend, it appears many have taken advantage of late closing times according to new data released today by Ireland’s leading multi-mobility app.
“Travel requests on the app were up 22% from the previous weekend, with an increase in late night bookings due to the reopening of nightclubs. 2am was the busiest time to request weekend travel with 200 requests per minute.
“With the popular Jazz Festival returning to Cork this weekend, they saw the biggest overall increase in travel requests in Ireland over the bank holiday weekend – with a 100% increase in taxi journeys compared to the previous weekend. However, Galwegians have taken over the place to stay up to date, with 3am the busiest time on the Free Now app on Sunday [October 24] night.
“While restrictions have gradually eased over the summer and fall months, the busiest time for weekend travel requests extends into the late evening. The most popular time for passengers now looking to greet their return home has increased from an average 11:40 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in October.
“We’ve seen the queue for the reopening of Coppers go viral on social media over the weekend, so it’s perhaps no surprise that in all major cities across Ireland, destinations from downtown where popular nightclubs are located were the most requested drop-off points, indicating that many were eager to get back on the dance floor!”
Statement from the Managing Director of Free Now Ireland
Free Now Ireland Managing Director Niall Carson said: “Taxi drivers play a key role in the night hospitality industry and Free Now were delighted to see such support for pubs and clubs at the weekend. end of reopening.
“As the hospitality industry, the transport sector and in particular taxi drivers have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is therefore an extremely positive sign that travel has increased by 22% during the first reopening weekend and we hope it continues as we head into the busy holiday season.”
