Little Cab digital taxi app expands services to Ethiopia –

Kenyan digital carpooling app, Little Cab is spreading its wings in Ethiopia. The company announced that it has finalized its plans to venture into one of Africa’s biggest markets. The country holds huge market potential with a massive population of over 112 million people. This will be the fifth country the digital app ventures into after Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Tanzania.

“Ethiopia has always been in our sights. However, we have always been very careful about entering it due to the nature of our business,” said Mr. Kamal Budhabhatti, CEO of Little.

“When we saw Safaricom heading to Ethiopia, we had the courage to go. It’s a big market and we see an opportunity to expand our services there,” he added.

Little Cab is looking to launch carpooling services from Addis Ababa, where it has signed deals with companies to source the services. The company’s strategy is to venture into food delivery and financial services by the end of 2022.

Little Cab had already planned to join the Ethiopian market before the pandemic slowed down operations. Nevertheless, the plans did come true and Little Cab is now looking to recruit 2,000 drivers to start operations. This figure is expected to reach around 10,000 within three months.

Little Cab has injected around 500 million shillings into the project for the next five years, with plans to add another 500 million shillings which will be channeled into business growth.

Mr. Budhabhatti expressed his optimism for the company in the new market.

“We have excellent Ethiopian partners. We felt this was a very large market, and to be successful there, we needed to work closely with Ethiopian companies who would bring a wealth of local and cultural knowledge. We have always understood the power of localization in our products.

“Having local Ethiopian partners would help us ensure that the product is customized to meet the local needs of Ethiopians.”

Little Cab has expanded its corporate customer base in Kenya, holding the largest share with approximately 100,000 drivers registered on the platform.
